Sign Manufacturing Using Wood
It may be that at present plastics and synthetic materials are gaining more popularity in the sign industry, yet the use of wood for signage is still one of the most used materials in manufacturing sign graphics. This is because wood is a material that is easy to work with and it is readily available anywhere at a reasonable price range. Considering all other materials, wood is still the favorite although signs made of wood should not be allowed in highly wet or humid environments because they have a tendency to warp, split or crack.
Making signage on wooden material is possible either by hand carving the design using a chisel or by using a routing machine which is controlled by a computer, known as CAD/CAM. There is also a machine called a pantograph machine in which letters are stencil-cut and a stylus is used to form letters using the outline of the small letters of the stencil. There are a host of other machines that can be used to put signs in wood, and these use the latest technology of computer cutters here such as lasers, plasma, water jets, used with large cutting areas, and any type of letter or logo can be cut out in any size.
The sandblasting method is another way of making signage with wood, which can also be used for other materials such as concrete, architectural foam boards, or glass, and the procedure is done by covering the surface with rubber masking material, then the letters are cut out and finally the material is blasted with fine sand. The depth of the letters can be determined by the softness of the material and the amount of time that the sand is blasted before it goes through the rubber and destroys the surface. The method of sandblasting is only recommended for wood that have even grain, like the redwood, for example, or else the surface will splinter and it will be uneven on the edges. Size is not limited when sandblasting is used. View website of professional sign designers here.
Plywood is the best type of wood used for signage using another method of sign manufacture called lamination. Standard plywood is made from exterior Douglas fir. Care must be taken before plywood can be used as a sign and this can be done by filling and sealing all flaws and edges before applying finishing coats. To prevent plywood from warping and delaminating, care must also be taken by weather-protecting exposed edges, especially the upper edges.
Nothing should stop you in using wood for your outdoor signage. With proper maintenance, using the right kind of wood for your signage will last for a long time. If you will notice that the paint starts to fade, you can repaint the wood and clear coat it with ultra violet protective coating and it will last for years of advertising exposure.
